You know that feeling. It happens in movies when children go to live with a distant relative they don’t recall ever meeting. As the children look around the house, they get a pit in their stomach. The house is both whimsical and eerie, and, as the viewer, you know that something amazing is about to happen. If you want to experience all of those feelings in real life, you need to visit the house on the rock.
House On The What?
Alex Jordan, a man who had a love for all things amazing, lived in Wyoming back in the 1940s. While exploring in the woods, he found a huge sandstone rock formation in the middle of the woods.
The sandstone was large enough to make a perfect foundation for a large home, and that’s exactly what Jordan did to it. He built a mansion with fourteen rooms full of whimsy and wonder. The home was originally intended as a vacation home for Jordan to enjoy, but its eccentric exterior soon caught the attention of passersby. After so many people began knocking on the door asking to see the house, Jordan started to charge admission.
Why Was It Built?
There are two legends circulating about why the House was built. Some say that it was simply a passion project of Alex Jordan’s.
Others claim it was intentionally built to rival another amazing home Talisien built by Frank Lloyd Wright. Regardless of its origin, this home is certainly worth a few hours of diversion on your next road trip.
What’s Inside The House?
The House on the Rock is not a historical site, and it is not a museum. It is a house entering each room is like entering a different world. Each room has a larger than life theme. One has a huge carousel, another is full of guns, and yet another is full of antique musical instruments. One room even has a sea monster.
The infinity room is a real crowd pleaser. The floors and ceilings of the humongous room were built to make it seem as if the room continues on an on forever. According to some guests, the entire home is poorly lit.
Much Ado About Nothing?
The House on the Rock is a polarizing tourist attraction. Some people think its amazing, and others have dubbed it a tourist trap. The House has plenty of amazing sights, but many of the oddities that are presented as if they were ancient have actually been bought in modern times. There are certainly plenty of stairs.
Perhaps the problem with the House on the Rock is that no one knows what to expect. The advertisement for the house includes some claims that are stretched, to say the least. This window into the wild imagination of Alex Jordan is certainly a spectacle worth seeing. With so much mystery and hype surrounding this home, the actual home can’t help but fall short of the curious imagination of visitors.
